GIF
Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) images are files with an extension of .gif.
A graphic image is saved as gif also is saved using compression techniques to make it smaller
for download on the web. GIF supports more colors and resolutions than jpeg, making it especially
effective for scanned photographs. The techniques used to compress GIF files (called LZW Compression), however, is patented, which means companies making products that use the gif format must obtain a license.
This does not apply to typical web users or businesses that include gifs in their web pages, GIF images display one line at a time when loading.
Interlaced GIF images load all at once, starting with blurry look and becoming sharper as they load. This is a good technique used for large images because the webpage
visitor can see a blurred outline of what is to come as it loads.
